In a YouTube video, Mr. OKeefe described the lawsuit as frivolous and pointed to a portion of the deposition in which David Hecker, the president of AFT Michigan, said that one of the goals of the lawsuit was to stop Project Veritas from doing the kind of work that it does., Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, said in a statement: Lets be clear who the wrongdoer is here: Project Veritas used a fake intern to lie her way into our Michigan office, to steal documents and to spy and they got caught. Funneling money surreptitiously to campaigns through other donors known as straw man donations would violate federal campaign finance laws. Prince had hired a former MI6 officer to help train the Project Veritas operatives, The Intercept wrote, but it did not identify the officer. And then Mark Mazzetti, you know, my colleague, who just is an extraordinary journalist, we - you know, we managed to suss out what was going - we think - to a great degree what was going on in Wyoming and these other states. NPR transcripts are created on a rush deadline by an NPR contractor. You know, they were always - you know, always on the lookout for connections they could make. He's a reporter for The New York Times. And we've written about that. I believe he was involved in an effort to battle pirates in Somalia. Prince a former C.I.A. The two men had known each other since Mr. Princes days running Blackwater, and shared an affinity for guns and the American West. And then he stays on working for a Project Veritas till roughly June of '18. Is that what these interviews were about? Their names are Beau Maier and Sofia LaRocca, and they're in Las Vegas for a Democratic primary debate. As education secretary, Ms. DeVos has been a vocal critic of teachers unions, saying in 2018 that they have a stranglehold over politicians at the federal and state levels. And, I mean, they were both active, but she was literally, you know, infiltrating these Democratic groups. GOLDMAN: Yeah, I would say an active - sure, an active player in certain parts of Trump's world, yeah, or conservative - the conservative world. DAVIES: That's a really fascinating example of the power of, you know, database reporting now because you knew they were doing the thing in Georgetown, but their campaign contributions in Wyoming have to be publicly reported. This is FRESH AIR. They - you know, there's a wide range of targets, and many of them have been exposed. There were steps taken to advance this plan, but in the end, it didn't happen because McMaster was fired. James OKeefe, the head of Project Veritas, declined to answer detailed questions about Mr. At the time I signed my [September] declaration I believed Jones Creek and CMNS to be Wyoming entities, but I have subsequently learned they are not; I believe they are Delaware entities, Prince wrote in the document, which he signed from California. Neither party wants to be infiltrated like this. Erik Prince, the former head of Blackwater Worldwide and the brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, has at times served as an informal adviser to Trump administration officials. So what I'm saying is from Richard Seddon's standpoint, the fact that she had a picture up on Project Veritas Exposed, that was a real risk they were taking, right? We'll talk more about his stories on undercover operations by conservatives to infiltrate Democratic and progressive groups after a short break. She was attending, you know, Democratic fundraisers. And in the end, you know, O'Keefe would release them and, you know, make a big deal out of them. He gave the examples of Jones Creek and CMNS Systems. However, neither of those entities appear to be registered to do business in Wyoming; the only reference the Tribune could find to a company named CMNS Systems was an LLC formed in Delaware in August months after Prince filed his suit. McMaster. This includes participating in marches or rallies in support of a movement or giving money to, or raising money for, any political candidate or election cause. You know, O'Keefe has clearly raised a lot of money, you know, millions of dollars. But I think - you would think that Democrats and Republicans would all be united, that this is a bipartisan issue, right? These were videos of - you know, in one case, Democrats or people working for the government who were - you know, it seemed like they were slow rolling the president's agenda or trying to thwart it or using - they were part of, you know, the DSA, the Democratic Socialists of America. GOLDMAN: In some instances, they were on, you know, these social - these dating apps, right? DAVIES: Right. Prince a former C.I.A. Mr. And I certainly don't think he thought he was going to get dragged into this. A man named Samuel Chamberlain who matched the description of the one employed by Mr. OKeefe denied he worked for Project Veritas. But "one of the most brazen operations of the campaign" was an attempt to take down H.R. DAVIES: Right. There is little publicly available information about the company, but multiple Prince ventures, including Blackwater, have been based out of Moyock, North Carolina. In that deposition, Mr. OKeefe defended the groups undercover tactics, saying they were part of a long tradition of investigative journalism going back to muckraking reporters like Upton Sinclair. Prince and Mr. Seddon said the goal of the private spying operation was to gather dirt both on Democrats and RINOs slang in conservative circles for Republicans in name only. The plan was to begin in Wyoming, they said, and expand operations from there. And so, you know, I can't tell you right now it hasn't, that somebody else isn't doing this. James OKeefe, a conservative activist, founded Project Veritas. State records show Moyock Medical Supplies was formed in Wyoming by an associate of Princes on April 15 two days after The Intercept published its article. Last week, our guest, reporter Adam Goldman, co-authored a story about a couple who ingratiated themselves with Democrats in Wyoming, often making substantial political contributions to ensure their access to valuable information. I'm Dave Davies, in for Terry Gross, who's off this week. officer who went on to win an important House seat in Virginia as a Democrat. And it all kind of went south when the Post exposed it. When a muckraking news site published a story alleging private security contractor and Blackwater founder Erik Prince had offered his services to a Russian mercenary firm, the connections to Wyoming were not obvious; the state was never mentioned in the piece. And then they married last week. GOLDMAN: What - the training they got was when they worked for an outfit called Project Veritas. DAVIES: We need to take a break here. You know, you say in one of these stories, this operation's use of spy craft to manipulate the politics of several states over the years greatly exceeds the tactics of traditional political tricks operations. You know, there was one exercise, I believe, where they had a cop - you know, a local cop who was there. If Judge Johnson concludes he lacks jurisdiction to hear the case in Wyoming, Princes attorneys say the suit should be transferred to the Southern District of New York, where The Intercept is based. He was dismayed, three former Project Veritas employees told the Times, with "O'Keefe's desire to produce quick media content rather than to run long-term infiltration operations." Ledeen said "someone she trusted" contacted her to help with the McMaster operation. WASHINGTON Erik Prince, the security contractor with close ties to the Trump administration, has in recent years helped recruit former American and British spies for secretive. And I realized they were giving money to Democrats in Wyoming, Arizona and Colorado. So he's certainly moved in this world before. Other outlets, however, have continued writing about the contractor. Prince and Mr. Seddon met in August 2018 with Susan Gore, a Wyoming heiress to the Gore-Tex fortune, Ms. Gore became the projects main benefactor. Mark Gordon, who was viewed as a RINO in some Wyoming conservative circles. So while Times staff members may vote, they are not allowed to endorse or campaign for candidates or political causes. But the effort is a glimpse of a vigorous private campaign to try to undermine political groups or individuals perceived to be in opposition to Mr. Trumps agenda. So O'Keefe's Instagram photo, you know, led people to realize that, you know, Prince had played a role, at least in letting Project Veritas use the ranch for training. Prince declined to comment. Its among a number of issues and motions that will have to be sorted out before a judge or jury would consider the accuracy of The Intercepts April article. GOLDMAN: Well, they - you know, they - Beau is from Cody, Wyo., so he had some Wyoming roots. met with White House and Pentagon officials. You know, this is something we haven't seen, right? Defendants wrote and published a false and defamatory article about a Wyoming residents Wyoming-based business activities knowing that it would cause harm principally in Wyoming, New York attorney Matthew Schwartz charged in one filing. There's an annual one, Nellie T. Ross Banquet, and I believe it's in Cheyenne every February. GOLDMAN: Project Veritas is founded by James O'Keefe. Presiding Judge Johnson, who is based in Cheyenne, has himself signaled some uncertainty about whether Wyoming is the right place for Princes case to be heard; in early November, Johnson asked the parties to submit additional briefs on either transferring the case to another district or delving further into the issues related to jurisdiction. Mr. Seddon was not. You know, in this recent story that you wrote with Mark Mazzetti of the Times, you introduce us to a couple. Efforts to locate Mr. Thomas were unsuccessful. He passed away recently. DAVIES: And when we say they targeted these public officials or FBI agents, what would they do? One of the undercover operatives also got a job working for a consortium of wealthy liberal donors the Wyoming Investor Network which had made a strategic decision to support Republican moderate candidates over those more closely aligned with Mr. Trumps agenda, the documents say. Prince have ties to President Trumps aides and family. And they targeted a reporter, a Washington - a very good Washington Post reporter named Stephanie McCrummen, who - they picked up on it very, very, very quickly GOLDMAN: And figured out that this woman was not who she said she was. There was a billionaire in - well, a very - I don't know if he was a billionaire. There was a massacre at a plaza in Iraq. Presented with the details of the operation, Ledeen told the Times she was just a messenger, "not part of a plot.". You know, and each time, you know, money is wired in furtherance of that crime, you know, that's also - that could be a possible count of mail fraud. Female undercover operatives tried to entrap FBI agents, sometimes using fake dating app profiles, and State Department employees, the Times reports. Both operations were run by Project Veritas, a conservative group that has gained attention using hidden cameras and microphones for sting operations on news organizations, Democratic politicians and liberal advocacy groups. And I got swept away reporting on that and eventually was able to come back to it. The Powell Tribune was unable to learn Princes voter history from 2002 and 2017. I knew something was off immediately. And last year, I learned that Beau and Sofia had been working out of this house in Georgetown. They had a private security firm. So Erik Prince, the private security contractor who is an ally and avid supporter of President Trump, connects with Project Veritas, who does these videos, and then they develop this whole different operation. The list included John Cox, then the director of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services, and Scott Talbott, then the director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. It's not clear to us why Prince decided to help Project Veritas. DAVIES: Right. DAVIES: So how did you come upon this couple, Beau and Sofia? Given Mr. Princes extensive personal and professional ties to Wyoming, it is certainly plausible that some or all of [The Intercepts] sources to the extent they exist at all were located in Wyoming, Princes legal team wrote. GOLDMAN: They were thwarting the president's agenda. GOLDMAN: I was going to say, you know, talking to Republicans, moderate Republicans, I mean, moderate - these guys are pretty conservative, by the way - when we're describing it as moderate Republicans they were targeting. And so we're all familiar with that, I think, to some extent. For example, Rolling Stone published an investigative piece in October asserting Prince participated in a plan to dampen turnout among Black voters in the 2016 election. One target in particular was Gov. Funneling contributions through a third party is a feature of the federal election code and most state election codes. But what we know is there was an arrangement made, and Erik Prince allowed Project Veritas to use his farm to train its operatives. To win his case, Prince will ultimately have to show the story was false and he may also have to prove the publication knew the story was false or showed a reckless disregard as to whether it was accurate. Remind us who they are and what they've done. In fact, I wrote a memo about what I had found. You know, he's a businessman. And so these people were brought on to help manage these many, many, many, many operations. Mr. Seddon launched his privately funded spying effort after leaving Project Veritas in 2018. DAVIES: So he is the guy who hires this British spy, Richard Seddon, to train operatives to, you know, gather intelligence from, you know, Democrats and progressives. The teachers union is asking for more than $3 million in damages, accusing the group of being a vigilante organization which claims to be dedicated to exposing corruption. Mr. Chamberlain and Mr. Thomas were on the list. When does he do this, and do we know why? He's a former British intelligence officer who served in Washington, D.C., and in Pakistan and eventually leaves the British Secret Intelligence Service and develops some relationship with Erik Prince, a security contractor, and ends up being director of field operations at the conservative group known as Project Veritas. There was a year-long lease that was signed that allowed Project Veritas to put its operatives in that fancy house. Citing his ties to the state, his attorneys opted to file Princes defamation case against The Intercept in Wyomings U.S. District Court in May. The plan was reportedly to send a female operative to Tosca, a restaurant McMaster frequented, to engage him in drinks and conversation and record him disparaging Trump or making other inappropriate remarks on camera. Months later, in June 2019, a report said we are expecting a big haul, including new lines of intelligence on the Republican side of the house.. We rely on our journalists to be independent observers. And as I was reporting this, somebody said, well, you know, her picture, you know, she's on that website. Fast-forward to 2007, and Erik Prince was living in McLean, Virginia, and spending time on his Middleburg property, Blackwater Ranch, designed as a family retreat just as his parent's home in Cody had been originally. 1-307-754-2221. Erik Prince, a political novice and former Navy SEAL who made a fortune in contracting security services to the U.S. Military, said in an interview with Breitbart that he will announce in the coming weeks whether he will challenge Barrasso in the Republican primary. DAVIES: Now, one of the more well-known operations - because, well, you reported on this - was an effort to embarrass Trump's national security adviser, H.R. Although he owns a home in Wapiti, Prince is not generally known as a Wyoming businessman. And they were deeply critical of Trump. We know that because Glenn put it up on his Instagram account. And they thought McMaster had fired, you know, several people who the president had brought on and - or Mike Flynn, his former - his first national security adviser had brought on. DAVIES: That's the Government Accountability Office. Project Veritas has said its activities are legal and protected by the First Amendment, and the case is scheduled to go to trial in the fall. And they were doing this - it appears that they were doing this from the house where Beau and Sofia lived with others. Prince might have approached for money for Mr. Seddons venture besides Ms. Gore. ADAM GOLDMAN: They went there after making sizable donations to the DNC, the Democratic National Committee - $10,000 each - at the request of a Colorado businessman who was a - he's a fundraiser for the Democrats and basically said, if you make this donation, you can come and hang out in Las Vegas. But if the case was transferred to New York, that states laws could apply. Even if it is true that Prince now genuinely considers himself a Wyoming resident, it cannot be said that [The Intercept] could fairly anticipate being [hauled] into court in Wyoming, the attorneys wrote in a September filing.
